Senior QA Engineer / Software Developer

Role Description

We are seeking a Senior QA Engineer / Software Developer in Test to join our team in a hybrid capacity, based in St Julian’s, Malta, with an option for partial remote work. We are looking for a Senior QA Engineer / SDET who can own product quality end-to-end and is comfortable designing, building, and maintaining automated tests, while still applying strong manual and exploratory testing where it adds value. This role will work closely with engineering teams to ensure test automation is part of the development process, not a parallel activity, and will collaborate with existing QA to capture and scale domain knowledge across the organisation.This position requires a pragmatic, hands-on profile that can make an immediate impact while helping mature our QA practices over time. 

Key Responsibilities

• Own and drive quality strategy across one or more product areas
• Design, build, and maintain automated test suites as part of the engineering workflow
• Collaborate with frontend and backend engineers to embed testing into CI/CD pipelines
• Perform manual and exploratory testing for new features, complex workflows, and risk areas
• Gradually rationalise and improve existing automation rather than rewriting for its own sake
• Work closely with the existing QA to transfer, document, and formalise domain knowledge
• Improve test coverage across UI, API, and integration layers
• Act as a quality advocate within delivery teams, identifying risks early and proposing solutions

Must-Have Requirements

• Proven experience as a Senior QA Engineer or SDET in a product engineering environment
• Hands-on experience building and maintaining test automation frameworks (e.g. Cypress or similar)
• Comfortable writing code for tests and working in a developer-centric workflow
• Strong manual and exploratory testing skills, including risk-based testing
• Experience working closely with developers and integrating tests into CI/CD
• Pragmatic mindset: knows when automation adds value and when manual testing is more effective
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative, non-territorial approach

Nice-to-Have

• Experience extending automation beyond UI (API, integration, contract tests)
• Experience helping teams transition automation ownership into engineering
• Prior exposure to mentoring or coaching on quality practices
• Experience working in environments with significant domain complexity
• Familiarity with test data management, test environments, or release quality metrics
